Stronghold Assassin

Stronghold Assassin was first introduced in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as part of a cycle of cards meant to interact with the graveyard mechanics prevalent in that block. The card features art by Daren Bader, whose work during this era helped define the dark, gothic aesthetic of the game. The mechanics reflect the flavor of a covert operative capable of removing high-value targets, cementing its role as a strategic tool in black-aligned deck archetypes.

The Seventh Edition version, released in 2001, marked the first time the card was included in a core set. This transition was significant as it signaled the card's enduring utility and its inclusion in the foundational library of the game at the time. The card was chosen for the core set to maintain a presence of creature-based removal in the base environment, remaining a respected staple for players who favored board control through tactical sacrifice.
