Where it came from
Stronghold Rats was released in May 2007 as part of the Future Sight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set is famously known for its experimental design, featuring cards from potential alternate futures or displaced timelines. The card reflects the set's mechanical interest in the graveyard as a resource, utilizing the 'transmute' mechanic originally introduced in the Ravnica block to allow players to discard the card to tutor for a replacement, providing tactical flexibility.
The artwork was illustrated by Dave Dorman, a veteran artist known for his contributions to the Star Wars expanded universe. Dorman’s depiction captures a dark, gritty aesthetic consistent with the creature type, emphasizing the menacing and swarm-like nature of the rats. While not a centerpiece of competitive play, the card is frequently noted by collectors for its distinctive frame style—a hallmark of the Future Sight set designed to signify its unique place within the game's expansive multiverse.
