Provenance

Where it came from

Stronghold Gambit was released in the year 2000 as part of the Nemesis expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Urza block, Nemesis aimed to resolve the lingering storylines of the Phyrexians' invasion of the plane of Rath. The card itself reflects the political and military tensions within the stronghold, designed to offer players a tactical advantage by manipulating the flow of combat during the game.

The artwork was illustrated by Daren Bader, a prolific contributor to the game during this era. Bader’s aesthetic for the Nemesis set leaned into atmospheric, high-contrast imagery, attempting to capture the claustrophobic and treacherous nature of the Rathi stronghold. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche tool for deck construction, valued more for its thematic contribution to the set's narrative than for its prominence in competitive tournament play.
