What it does
A person outside the game looks at target opponent's hand and chooses a nonland card from it. That player discards that card.

Where it came from
Subcontract is a card from the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Unstable, the third 'un-set' designed for casual, silver-bordered play. These sets are intended to explore mechanics that would be too disruptive for traditional tournaments, focusing instead on humor, meta-commentary, and creative rules-bending. The set was developed by a team led by Mark Rosewater, who sought to blend classic Magic gameplay with whimsical concepts that reward players for experimenting with the physical components of the game itself.
The card features an illustration by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering known for his moody and ethereal artistic style. Hamm's design for Subcontract humorously visualizes the concept of outsourcing one's deck-building or organizational tasks. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the dedicated player base for its ability to create chaotic, lighthearted social interactions during draft environments, effectively embodying the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Unstable expansion.
