Ground Pounder

Ground Pounder was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the third silver-bordered product from Wizards of the Coast, was intentionally designed to operate outside the standard tournament-legal rules of the game. The development team, led by Mark Rosewater, aimed to explore mechanics that were intentionally chaotic, humorous, and focused on physical interaction, moving away from the rigid mechanical constraints of core sets.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who was tasked with visualizing the set’s whimsical tone. The design centers on the 'Contraption' mechanic and the physical manipulation of the game state, reflecting the set’s goal of prioritizing player experience and laughter over competitive viability. Upon its release, Unstable was widely praised by the community for its ingenuity and its ability to challenge players to engage with the game in unconventional ways, solidifying its status as a beloved oddity in the game’s long history.
