Subtlety

Subtlety was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2, a product specifically designed to introduce powerful cards directly into the Modern format without requiring them to pass through a Standard legality window. As an 'Elemental Incarnation,' this card belongs to a cycle of mythic rare creatures inspired by the classic cycle from the Lorwyn block, reimagined with contemporary mechanics that allow them to be cast for zero mana by exiling a matching color card from the player's hand.

The art for this specific printing was created by illustrator Johann Bodin, who focused on the ethereal, shifting nature of the air element to represent the card's function of delaying an opponent's spell. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a staple utility piece in competitive Modern, particularly within control and tempo-oriented archetypes, praised for its versatility as both a disruptive tool in the early game and a flying threat in the late game.
