Where it came from
Subtlety was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product specifically designed to introduce new, powerful cards directly into the Modern format. It belongs to a cycle of five mythic rare elementals, each designed to evoke the spirit of the iconic 'Pitch Spells' from the Mercadian Masques block, allowing players to cast powerful disruptive effects for zero mana by exiling a card of the same color from their hand.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized his signature ethereal and flowing style to visualize the concept of a subtle, shifting elemental force. Upon release, the card saw immediate adoption in competitive play, particularly in control and tempo strategies, as its ability to shift creatures or planeswalkers to the top or bottom of a library provided a versatile answer to the varied threats found in high-level tournament environments.
