Where it came from
Summoner's Bane was released in 2014 as part of the Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska set, a preconstructed product designed to highlight the rivalry between the blue-aligned mind mage Jace Beleren and the green-black aligned gorgon Vraska. The card was originally printed in the Eventide expansion, but this specific inclusion serves to bolster the blue deck's control capabilities by providing a counterspell that also offers a tempo advantage through the creation of an Illusion token.
The artwork for this printing was provided by Mike Bierek, who sought to visually capture the essence of a spell that nullifies a summon while leaving behind a spectral remnant. The design focuses on the tension between the fluid, ethereal nature of Jace's magic and the disruptive utility of the card, which has been well-regarded by players for its efficiency in Limited and casual environments.
