Where it came from
Summoning Materia, card 124 in the Final Fantasy Commander set, was released as part of a thematic expansion designed to capture the iconic magic system from the 1997 video game Final Fantasy VII. The card was developed to translate the game's mechanic of slotting crystalline spheres into equipment to unlock powerful entity manifestations, serving as a versatile utility card within the Commander gameplay format.
The card’s visual design utilizes the classic, translucent aesthetic established in the original game's character models and promotional art. Illustrators aimed to evoke the ethereal, glowing quality of the source material while maintaining the functional clarity required for trading card game play. Upon release, the set was noted by players for its faithful adaptation of game mechanics into card-based synergies, solidifying its place as a staple for deck-building enthusiasts who value thematic immersion.
