Where it came from
Thancred Waters was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Final Fantasy Commander deck series. This collection emerged from a high-profile collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix, intended to celebrate the legacy of the Final Fantasy franchise by reimagining its iconic characters through the mechanical framework of Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to capture Thancred’s role within the narrative of Final Fantasy XIV, specifically emphasizing his transition from a roguish spy to a stalwart protector, utilizing gameplay mechanics that reflect his combat versatility.
The artistic direction for this card sought to align with the distinct visual language of Final Fantasy XIV while adhering to the established aesthetic standards of Magic: The Gathering. Illustrators involved in this crossover were tasked with balancing the character’s recognizable costume design with the atmospheric, illustrative style characteristic of modern legendary creatures. Upon release, the card was received with significant interest by the trading card game community, largely due to the integration of beloved characters into the Commander format, which provided fans of the source material a new way to interact with Thancred’s lore.
