Where it came from
Sundering Stroke was introduced as part of the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, drawing heavy inspiration from Arthurian legend and high-fantasy folklore. The card was designed as a powerful sorcery spell, specifically utilizing the 'Adamant' mechanic that rewards players for committing deeply to a single color of mana. It serves as a narrative representation of a devastating magical impact, fitting perfectly into the set's fairy-tale aesthetic.
The illustration for this promo version was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is known for his work across the Magic: The Gathering catalog. Kieryluk focused on capturing the explosive, destructive energy of the spell, utilizing a vibrant color palette and dramatic composition to distinguish this promo from the standard set version. Upon its release, it was distributed through various promotional channels, including Friday Night Magic events, and was generally well-received by players looking for high-impact effects in red-based decks.
