Where it came from
Sunken Hollow first appeared in the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, designed as part of a cycle of lands intended to support dual-color mana bases while interacting with the basic land types of the block. Its inclusion in Commander 2020 served to provide players with a functional, budget-conscious land option that rewards decks utilizing a high density of basic lands. The card’s design, mechanically centered on the 'tango land' template, requires a player to control two basic lands for it to enter the battlefield untapped, balancing its power level for multiplayer formats.
The illustrative work for this version was handled by artist Adam Paquette. Known for his evocative landscape paintings within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, Paquette utilized a color palette of deep blues and muted purples to convey the eerie, corrupted aesthetic of a Zendikar plane overtaken by the Eldrazi. The visual direction emphasizes the desolation of the terrain, aiming to ground the card in the specific narrative context of the Battle for Zendikar arc while remaining consistent with the aesthetic standards of the Commander 2020 preconstructed decks.
