Where it came from
Sunken Hollow first appeared in the Battle for Zendikar set for Magic: The Gathering in 2015, designed as part of a cycle of allied-colored lands intended to support multicolor deck building. Its design concept centers on the ethereal, shifting landscapes of Zendikar, a plane defined by its treacherous terrain and the lingering influence of the eldritch titans. The card features art by Adam Paquette, who utilized a muted, atmospheric palette to emphasize the desolate and submerged nature of the geography.
The Marvel Super Heroes Commander version, released in 2024, adapts this utility land for the crossover set, maintaining the original's function while integrating it into a thematic collection focused on Marvel's expansive roster of characters. The card remains a practical tool for mana fixing in commander formats, favored by players for its efficiency in providing dual-color access. Its inclusion in this specific set reflects the ongoing collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Marvel, highlighting a convergence of fantasy strategy gaming and iconic comic book aesthetics.
