Where it came from
Sunspire Griffin was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion set for Magic: The Gathering. As a common-rarity creature card, it was designed to support the Selesnya Conclave, one of the primary factions represented in the set. The card reflects the faction's affinity for flying creatures and white-mana-aligned defensive strategies, fitting into the draft environment's mechanics where players were encouraged to build board presence through token generation and creature-based keywords.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Nils Hamm, whose work often features ethereal lighting and atmospheric textures. Hamm's design emphasizes the majestic, bird-like nature of the griffin as it glides over the high-altitude architectural spires of the city-plane Ravnica. The design successfully captures the aesthetic of the Selesnya guild, grounding the creature within the distinct gothic-fantasy urban environment that defined the set's visual identity.
