Provenance

Where it came from

Suq'Ata Lancer originated in the 1996 Mirage expansion, representing the desert-dwelling culture of Jamuraa. When it was selected for inclusion in the 2006 Time Spiral 'Timeshifted' subset, it was chosen to evoke the flavor of early Magic: The Gathering history. This subset served as a tribute to the game's evolution, reprinting iconic or mechanically significant cards from the past with their original art and the classic frame, but distinguished by the distinct purple expansion symbol.

The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent artist whose work defines much of the mid-90s aesthetic of the game. His design focused on the lithe, nomadic nature of the Lancer, emphasizing the grit and heat of the desert setting. Upon its re-release in the Timeshifted set, it was received by players as a nostalgic nod to the 'flanking' mechanic, which was reintroduced during the Time Spiral block to highlight the depth of the game's tactical history.
