Surge to Victory

Surge to Victory was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 set, a collection specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was featured in the Prismari Performance deck, a themed preconstructed set centered around the Izzet color identity—blue and red—which emphasizes instant and sorcery spells. Mechanically, the card was designed to reward players for casting aggressive spells, allowing them to exile an instant or sorcery from their graveyard and cast copies of it whenever a creature they control deals combat damage to a player.

The card's art was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, who captured the chaotic, expressive energy characteristic of the Prismari college from the Strixhaven plane. His illustration focuses on a dynamic, magically charged moment, reflecting the set’s themes of artistic performance and elemental power. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to generate significant value in spell-focused decks, quickly becoming a staple choice for players looking to chain powerful sorceries through combat.
