Where it came from
Surge to Victory was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, this sorcery card reflects the academic and magical themes of the Strixhaven expansion, which centers on a university for mages. The card was created to provide high-impact, late-game support for strategies that focus on casting instants and sorceries, embodying the competitive spirit of the school's Lorehold College.
The card features artwork by artist Magali Villeneuve, whose distinct style brings a sense of grand scale and mystical intensity to the piece. Villeneuve’s illustration was intended to capture the climactic feeling of channeling overwhelming magical energy to turn the tide of a duel. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its unique ability to exile spells and repeatedly copy them, becoming a staple in red-aligned spellcasting decks.
