Surgeon General Commander

Surgeon General Commander was originally released as a promotional card for Magic: The Gathering, specifically designed for Unfinity, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast's 'Un-set' series. These sets are intentionally designed to be lighthearted, prioritizing humor and unconventional mechanical interactions over the strict rules governing tournament-legal play. The card's design features the signature aesthetic of the set's creative team, emphasizing the satirical 'space carnival' theme that defines Unfinity.

The card was illustrated by Wisnutan, who leaned into the retro-futuristic, whimsical aesthetic characteristic of the Un-set aesthetic. By blending the visual tropes of a medical professional with the fantastical, gadget-heavy elements of a space-themed carnival, the illustration serves to reinforce the card's comedic utility. Within the community, the card is recognized for its unique 'augment' and 'host' mechanics, which were central to the set's experimental gameplay design and were well-received by players looking for a more relaxed and creative social gaming experience.
