Where it came from
Surgeon General Commander was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned set, a standalone box set designed by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering. The card was conceived as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the game's Commander format, specifically utilizing the silver-bordered ruleset, which allows for mechanics that are typically too disruptive or unconventional for standard competitive play.
The card’s design centers on the meta-narrative of the game, utilizing a layout that mimics the traditional commander card frame while offering a playful, albeit rule-breaking, ability. It was illustrated by Greg Staples, who captured a whimsical, medical-themed aesthetic that fits the chaotic nature of the Unsanctioned series, a collection intended primarily for casual, social play environments rather than professional tournaments.
