Where it came from
Survival of the Fittest was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Exodus. As a card that allows players to discard creatures to search their deck for others, it became a cornerstone of competitive play, particularly in formats like Legacy. Its power level and utility made it a highly sought-after staple for tournament players throughout the game's history.
The 2009 Judge Gift version features unique, stylized artwork by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who moved away from the traditional grim aesthetic of the original card to provide a more refined, painterly look suitable for the prestigious Judge Gift program. These cards were distributed exclusively to certified judges as a token of appreciation for their volunteer service at major events, making them a scarce and coveted collector's item within the community.
