Where it came from
Dark Ritual was originally released as a common card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the quintessential black mana acceleration spell. By 2009, when this specific promotional version was commissioned for the Judge Gift program, the card had been rotated out of standard play formats for years, cementing its status as a foundational piece of Magic history and a staple in eternal formats like Legacy.
The 2009 Judge Gift version features unique, evocative artwork by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more literal interpretations of the card's history toward a darker, more atmospheric visual style. This print was distributed exclusively to certified judges of the DCI program as a reward for their service, making it a significant collector's item that highlights the prestige associated with the tournament judging community during that era.
