Where it came from
Swindler's Scheme was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around the organized crime syndicates of a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis. The card fits into the 'Obscura Operation' deck, which centers on the mechanics of card manipulation and secrecy, reflecting the manipulative nature of the Obscura faction within the game's lore.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the high-stakes, opulent aesthetic defining the New Capenna plane. Designed as a blue enchantment, it challenges opponents to guess the contents of a player's hand, embodying the themes of bluffing and deception essential to the set's narrative identity. It was well-received by players focusing on political or group-slug commander strategies for its ability to generate psychological pressure at the table.
