Where it came from
Swooping Protector was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired art deco metropolis ruled by five powerful crime families, and the card reflects this noir aesthetic through its depiction of an angelic guardian patrolling the city's skyline.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who sought to capture the blend of gothic architecture and high-fantasy elegance central to the New Capenna setting. Mechanically, the card utilizes the 'shield counter' keyword introduced in this set, which provides a thematic layer of invulnerability fitting for an angelic protector, and it remains a staple common-rarity utility creature for players drafting the set.
