Where it came from
Vivien on the Hunt was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set centers on a decadent, Art Deco-inspired metropolis controlled by five warring crime syndicates, representing a departure from the traditional high-fantasy settings of the game. The card features Vivien Reid, a recurring planeswalker character known for her connection to nature and animal spirits, reimagined here in a period-appropriate ensemble to match the urban, noir-inflected aesthetic of the plane.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, a frequent contributor to the game whose work is noted for its dynamic lighting and character focus. His design for this iteration of Vivien emphasizes the juxtaposition between her wilderness origins and the sophisticated, industrial setting of New Capenna. Upon release, the card drew significant attention from the competitive community due to its complex ability set, which allowed for powerful creature-based combos, cementing its status as a sought-after staple within the set's lineup.
