Sword of Fire and Ice

The Sword of Fire and Ice originally debuted in the 2003 Darksteel set as a marquee Equipment card, representing a cycle of legendary artifacts imbued with the power of opposing mana colors. It was created during an era of Magic: The Gathering design that sought to emphasize high-impact, utility-driven artifacts that could swing the momentum of a game through combat damage triggers. The design, credited to the Wizards of the Coast R&D team, remains a staple in competitive formats for its ability to provide both card advantage and protection from two dominant colors.

The Double Masters printing, which features collector number 365, utilizes the iconic aesthetic established by the original card while incorporating the premium presentation associated with a masters-level release. The illustration, rendered by Greg Staples, captures the cold, crystalline essence of ice balanced against the searing, jagged energy of fire. Upon its inclusion in Double Masters, the card was widely praised by the community for its refined frame and its continued relevance as one of the most powerful and flexible pieces of equipment in the game's long history.
