Where it came from
Magus of the Will was originally printed in the Commander 2017 set as part of a cycle of creatures designed to mirror the powerful effects of iconic spells from Magic: The Gathering's history. This specific card, released in the 2020 Double Masters set, features new artwork by Magali Villeneuve. Villeneuve’s illustration depicts the enigmatic Magus in a style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game, emphasizing the character's mastery over the graveyard and their connection to the legendary Yawgmoth’s Will.
The card was included in Double Masters as a sought-after reprint intended to provide players with access to a strategic utility piece that allows for graveyard recursion. The design choice to assign these powerful sorcery effects to a creature body provides an interactive element in gameplay, forcing opponents to manage threats on the battlefield rather than just the stack. It has been well-regarded by the community for its blend of tactical depth and Villeneuve’s distinct, painterly approach to the character’s design.
