What it does
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from blue and from black.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, surveil 2. Then you may cast an instant or sorcery spell with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard without paying its mana cost. If that spell would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead.

Where it came from
The Sword of Once and Future was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set March of the Machine. It serves as the final installment in a cycle of 'Sword of X and Y' equipment cards, a long-running series that began in 2003 with the original Mirrodin block. The card was designed to represent the intersection of past and future themes central to the Phyrexian invasion storyline, granting protection from blue and black mana, which are historically significant colors within the game's lore.
The illustration was rendered by artist Dmitry Burmak, who aimed to evoke the ethereal and time-bending aesthetic associated with the item's mechanical function. Mechanically, the card allows players to cast an instant or sorcery from their graveyard, reflecting the 'once and future' title through its ability to cycle past spells into the present. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its synergy with graveyard-focused strategies and its status as the completion of a two-decade-long design cycle.
