What it does
Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has protection from blue and from black.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, surveil 2. Then you may cast an instant or sorcery spell with mana value 2 or less from your graveyard without paying its mana cost. If that spell would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead.

Where it came from
The Sword of Once and Future was released in 2023 as part of the promotional offerings for the Magic: The Gathering set March of the Machine. As the final installment in a long-standing cycle of 'Sword' equipment cards that began in the early 2000s, this item was designed to mirror the thematic complexity of the Phyrexians' multiversal invasion, blending the aesthetic of blue and black mana identities.
The card features illustration by Dominik Mayer, whose distinct, angular, and high-contrast style became a signature of the set's visual direction. Mayer aimed to capture a sense of ominous, futuristic regality, emphasizing sharp geometry and deep, atmospheric colors. The card was well-received by players for both its powerful mechanical utility in competitive formats and its striking artistic departure from traditional sword designs.
