Sword of the Paruns

Sword of the Paruns was originally introduced in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering expansion Guildpact, representing the legendary armaments of the guild founders of Ravnica. The card was designed as a powerful artifact equipment that provides flexibility through two distinct modes, allowing a creature to become either a larger offensive threat or a source of utility by untapping permanents. Its inclusion in the 2024 Ravnica Remastered set serves as a curated reprint, offering players a nostalgic return to the lore of the original block with refreshed, modernized card framing.

The mechanical identity of the card centers on the Paruns, the ancient leaders who signed the Guildpact. In the context of the game's mechanics, the design emphasizes the influence these figures held over the city-plane's infrastructure. While the original art by Dan Scott focused on a singular, ornate blade, later iterations and thematic treatments have maintained the weapon's status as a quintessential piece of Ravnican history. The card remains a staple in casual Commander formats, valued for its ability to enable infinite mana loops and complex engine combos.
