Where it came from
Sword of the Paruns was released in 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as part of a cycle of legendary equipment, it honors the guild leaders or 'paruns' of Ravnica. The card was created during a period when the game was heavily emphasizing guild-based synergies, and its mechanics reflect the collaborative, multi-functional nature of the setting's ruling bodies.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his realistic, textured approach to oil painting. Giancola aimed to convey a sense of ancient authority and heavy, ceremonial craftsmanship through the sword's design. Upon release, it was well-regarded by players for its versatile utility, specifically its ability to untap creatures and grant them power boosts, making it a staple in commander decks that focus on creature-based battlefield control.
