Sydri, Galvanic Genius

Sydri, Galvanic Genius was introduced as part of the Commander 2016 set, a release focused on four-color legendary creatures and distinct mechanical archetypes. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format, the card was crafted to serve as a commander for decks utilizing the Esper color identity—white, blue, and black—providing players with a unique way to animate non-creature artifacts. Her development was centered on the concept of a master artificer capable of breathing life into metallic constructs, reflecting the set's broader theme of artifact synergy and technical mastery.

The character design and illustration for Sydri were executed by artist Greg Staples, who rendered her as a sophisticated, imposing figure surrounded by swirling machinery. The artwork aims to capture her role as a visionary genius within the Alara setting, blending elements of high fantasy with intricate technological aesthetics. Upon her release, Sydri was well-received by the player base for her versatility, as her ability to turn artifacts into creatures with lifelink and deathtouch opened up numerous strategic possibilities that remain a staple in artifact-focused Commander play today.
