Provenance

Where it came from

The Sylvan Basilisk was originally printed in the Legends expansion in 1994, designed by Wizards of the Coast during a formative era of Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to provide a unique combat mechanic, allowing a creature to destroy any creature it blocks or is blocked by, effectively turning it into a powerful deterrent on the battlefield. Its inclusion in the Tenth Edition core set in 2007 served to reintroduce this classic mechanical identity to a new generation of players, marking the end of the white-bordered core set era.

For the Tenth Edition printing, the card was illustrated by Steven Belledin. Belledin’s depiction focused on the creature's predatory, forest-dwelling nature, utilizing a style consistent with the modernized aesthetic of 2000s-era Magic cards. The artwork was well-received for its clear visual narrative, capturing the basilisk's lethal reputation within a woodland setting, and helped cement the card's status as a reliable, if niche, uncommon staple for green-aligned decks of that period.
