Sylvan Tutor

Sylvan Tutor was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set, an introductory Magic: The Gathering product designed to simplify gameplay mechanics for new players. The card functions as a restricted tutor effect, allowing the player to search their library for a green card and place it on top of their deck, reflecting the set's focus on accessible yet strategic interaction. Because Portal cards were originally restricted from tournament play, they were initially viewed as secondary to core set cards, though the card’s efficiency later cemented its place in Commander and other formats.

The artwork was created by Eric Peterson, who contributed several illustrations to the Portal set. His design leans into the thematic identity of the set's 'green' color alignment, depicting a scholarly figure amidst a natural, ethereal setting to represent the concept of magical guidance or study. While the art style of Portal was distinct from the main game's complex aesthetic, Peterson's work is recognized for effectively communicating the card’s mechanical purpose through clear, evocative imagery.
