Where it came from
The Sylvan Tutor, originally printed in the Portal Second Age set, was reissued as a premium foil card in the 2020 Judge Gift program. These cards serve as a token of appreciation for certified Magic: The Gathering judges who contribute their time and expertise to the community by officiating events. The 2020 promotional cycle was designed to reward these individuals with highly functional and aesthetically distinct versions of cards that see play in various formats, such as Commander.
This specific iteration features new, evocative artwork by illustrator Lie Setiawan, who moved away from the traditional high-fantasy style to lean into a more fluid, illustrative aesthetic. The card reflects the modern design direction of Wizards of the Coast, which often utilizes the Judge Gift program to highlight contemporary digital artists. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors alike, particularly for the crisp, clean visual update to a classic tutor effect that remains a staple for green-aligned decks.
