Where it came from
Syr Faren, the Hengehammer was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore a top-down fairy tale theme, blending Arthurian legend with classic Brothers Grimm motifs, and this card specifically represents the knightly archetypes central to the plane of Eldraine. Its mechanics, which focus on buffing other attacking creatures, were crafted to reflect the character's role as a supportive leader on the battlefield.
The artwork for Syr Faren was illustrated by Bram Sels, who sought to capture the character's imposing stature and his connection to the natural, verdant magic of the Henge. By depicting the knight with oversized, rustic weaponry and a forest-bound aesthetic, the design team aimed to emphasize the juxtaposition between disciplined chivalry and the wild, untamed forces of the Eldraine wilderness. Upon release, the card was received as a notable addition for players interested in aggressive, synergy-heavy green strategies.
