Where it came from
Syrix, Carrier of the Flame was released in 2022 as part of the Commander set for Streets of New Capenna. The card was designed to function as a legendary creature within the magic-themed trading card game, specifically drawing upon the Art Deco-inspired aesthetic of the set, which depicts a city run by powerful criminal families. The character represents the phoenix archetype, aligning with the red-black color identity that focuses on graveyard recursion and aggressive sacrifice strategies.
The artwork was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who aimed to capture the fiery, transient essence of a phoenix emerging from the ashes of New Capenna. Upon its debut, the card was received as a niche but effective utility commander for players focusing on phoenix-tribal decks. Its mechanics provide a distinct rhythm of play, rewarding players for utilizing their graveyard, which has made it a steady if specialized inclusion for fans of the game's high-fantasy, urban noir setting.
