Where it came from
Champion of Wits was originally released in the 2017 Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to introduce a recurring card-advantage mechanic rooted in the 'eternalize' keyword. The card reflects the desert-themed, Egyptian-inspired aesthetic of the Amonkhet block, focusing on the tactical trade-off of discarding cards to draw new ones while maintaining a lingering presence on the battlefield.
This specific iteration, numbered 213, appeared in the New Capenna Commander preconstructed deck release. While the original illustration by Magali Villeneuve captured the essence of an enigmatic desert scholar, this reprint maintains the mechanical identity of the creature as a staple for blue-aligned utility decks. It is widely regarded by players as a flexible mid-game engine, valued for its ability to filter hand quality throughout the duration of a match.
