Where it came from
Take the Bait was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander set, a collection themed around a gothic, mystery-inspired investigation on the plane of Ravnica. The card functions as an instant within the game's mechanics, designed to encourage interaction by forcing opponents' creatures to attack, leaning into the set's broader themes of social deduction and atmospheric intrigue.
The illustration is the work of artist Eli Minaya, who leaned into the noir-inspired aesthetic pervasive throughout the Karlov Manor narrative. By depicting a scene of calculated provocation, the art complements the card's function, capturing the essence of a trap being sprung in the dimly lit, urban environment characteristic of Ravnica's deeper districts.
