Where it came from
Take the Bait was released in 2024 as part of the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set draws heavy inspiration from classic noir and murder mystery tropes, focusing on investigation and intrigue within the plane of Ravnica. The card was designed to mechanically reflect the set's central themes of deception and redirection, functioning as a Goad card that forces opponents to attack one another, effectively pulling them into a trap.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Alayna Danner, who has a long-standing history of contributing lush, atmospheric art to the game. Danner focused on the visual tension of the act, utilizing the moody lighting and architectural style iconic to the cityscape of Ravnica. Upon its release, the card was received positively by Commander players for its efficient mana cost and its ability to act as a political tool in multiplayer games, where shifting aggression is a primary strategic element.
