Where it came from
Take Up the Shield was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set, a pivotal return to the Magic: The Gathering franchise's spiritual home. The card was designed as a white common-rarity instant, fitting into the set's broader mechanical theme of encouraging legendary creatures and high-fantasy heroism. Its inclusion served to provide players with a versatile tool for protecting creatures in combat, echoing the protective themes often associated with the color white in the game's color pie.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who sought to capture a moment of divine or martial intervention. The imagery centers on a protective aura manifesting as a shield to guard a warrior in the heat of battle. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players in the limited format for its efficiency and ability to swing combat outcomes, solidifying its place as a reliable utility spell within the Dominaria United drafting environment.
