Where it came from
Take Up the Shield was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Foundations Jumpstart set in 2024. Designed to be accessible to newer players, the Foundations set serves as an entry point into the game, featuring cards that establish core mechanics and themes essential to the Magic: The Gathering experience. This specific card was included to provide a versatile tool for white-aligned decks, focusing on the game's long-standing tradition of protective combat spells.
The card’s design reflects the classic aesthetic of high-fantasy combat, emphasizing the defensive capabilities inherent in white mana. By providing both a power boost and the indestructible keyword, the card embodies the mechanical identity of its color. The artwork and composition align with the updated visual standards of the current era of Magic, focusing on clear, impactful iconography that communicates its function immediately to players during a match.
