Where it came from
Tales of the Ancestors was released in 2021 as part of the Kaldheim Commander set, a collection of supplemental cards designed for the Magic: The Gathering Commander format. The card draws heavily from the Norse-inspired aesthetics of the Kaldheim plane, emphasizing the set's themes of sagas, tribal synergy, and the cyclical nature of life and death in a harsh, frozen mythology.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the fantasy field known for her detailed character portraits and evocative lighting. Her design for this piece focuses on the atmospheric weight of ancestral knowledge, utilizing a rich, cool color palette to reflect the icy climate of the plane while grounding the magical effect in the visual language of ancient scrolls and spectral figures.
