Where it came from
Tale's End was released as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically appearing as a promotional card. As a counterspell capable of targeting triggered or activated abilities as well as legendary spells, it was designed to provide players with a versatile, low-cost utility tool during the 2019 competitive season. The card serves as a thematic nod to the conclusion of the long-running Bolas Arc narrative, capturing a pivotal moment where various legends meet their finality.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the game are known for their distinctively fluid, ethereal aesthetic. Voss sought to capture the gravity of the card's function, emphasizing the theme of finality through soft light and evocative character placement. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base for its strategic flexibility in formats ranging from Standard to Commander, quickly becoming a staple for blue-aligned decks.
