Where it came from
Talon Trooper was originally released in the 2017 Modern Masters set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as a curated anthology, specifically crafted to provide players with access to powerful cards from the game's recent history while refreshing the draft environment. The card itself features a Griffin Knight, a staple creature type within the white color identity of the game, and fits into the set's broader mechanical themes of synergy and efficient creature-based combat.
The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Steve Prescott, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Prescott's design for the Talon Trooper emphasizes the soaring, avian nature of the creature, utilizing dynamic lighting and a sense of movement to convey the card's function as a flying threat. Modern Masters 2017 was generally well-received by the player community for its balanced Limited environment and its inclusion of high-utility cards, allowing pieces like the Talon Trooper to serve as reliable utility in gameplay scenarios.
