Where it came from
Talrand, Sky Summoner was released in July 2012 as part of the Magic 2013 core set. Designed as a blue legendary creature, the card was created to provide a centerpiece for players who favor spell-heavy control decks, rewarding the casting of instant and sorcery spells by generating 2/2 Drake creature tokens. Its design reflects the strategic identity of the blue color philosophy in Magic: The Gathering, emphasizing manipulation of the board through tempo and efficiency.
The character Talrand was conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast design team to represent the coastal mages of the plane of Shandalar. The card art, illustrated by Svetlin Velinov, depicts the summoner amidst his drake companions, utilizing a dynamic, high-fantasy style that became highly recognizable within the community. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander format player base, where its ability to scale with spell density made it a popular choice for both casual and competitive deck builders.
