Where it came from
Tangled Colony was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set drew heavy inspiration from classic European fairy tales and folklore, reimagining these tropes within the established high-fantasy multiverse of Eldraine. Designed as a creature card, Tangled Colony functions as a mechanical embodiment of the swarm-like nature of the forest's corruption, fitting into the set's broader themes of encroaching wilderness and unsettling enchantment.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Svetlin Velinov, who utilized a moody, atmospheric palette to emphasize the creature's parasitic and collective qualities. The illustration focuses on the overwhelming density of the entity, aligning with the designers' intent to create a low-cost, high-pressure card that rewards players for aggressive, wide-board strategies. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its distinctive ability to scale in power based on the number of copies controlled, a design choice that echoes the frantic energy of a hive-mind organism.
