Where it came from
Tangled Colony was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in September 2023, serving as a standout creature card within the expansion's mechanical framework. The card features a recurring theme of the set, which blends classic fairy-tale tropes with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Its design emphasizes the 'rat' creature type, a long-standing archetype in the game known for scaling in power when multiple copies occupy the battlefield simultaneously.
The artwork for this particular promotional version was produced by Wizards of the Coast's internal creative team to highlight the card's unique visual identity within the Eldraine aesthetic. By utilizing the set's signature whimsical yet slightly eerie artistic style, the illustration aims to capture the swarm mentality of the creature. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to aggressive 'tribal' decks, valued for its ability to punish opponents who utilize creature-heavy strategies.
