Where it came from
Tar Snare was originally released as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set in early 2016, designed as a common-rarity instant for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the planar world of Zendikar, the card depicts the tactical use of indigenous flora by the Zendikari resistance to trap the otherworldly Eldrazi invaders. Its mechanics reflect the high-stakes environment of a world physically fighting back against corruption.
The illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who emphasized the organic, reactive nature of the trap through sharp, verdant linework and contrasting movement. Within the competitive landscape, the card serves as a functional tool for limited play formats, prized for its thematic consistency with the set's 'Landfall' and resource-denial mechanics rather than as a centerpiece for constructed deck archetypes.
