Where it came from
Tar Snare was released in January 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Zendikar, the expansion focused on the conflict between the plane's inhabitants and the invading Eldrazi titans. As a common card, it served as a functional piece of removal designed to help players navigate the limited draft environment by providing a thematic answer to aggressive ground-based threats.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose work often leans into the dark, visceral aesthetic of the Magic universe. His depiction of the Tar Snare focuses on the grim reality of the Zendikari landscape, capturing the moment a trap is sprung in the sticky, hazardous terrain. The design was intended to emphasize the perilous nature of the plane, using the visual motif of the land itself acting as a combatant against the Eldrazi forces.
