Provenance

Where it came from

Tariel, Reckoner of Souls was first released in the 2011 Commander product, serving as the face card for the Heavenly Inferno deck. The character represents an angel from the plane of Ravnica, tasked with the grim duty of scouring the battlefield to reclaim the souls of the dead for the side of righteousness. As a design, it functions as a high-mana cost creature that emphasizes the graveyard-interaction themes prevalent in the Boros color identity at the time.

The artwork was commissioned from Wayne Reynolds, a prolific illustrator whose dynamic and high-contrast style became a visual hallmark for Magic: The Gathering throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s. Reynolds captured Tariel with a sense of aggressive, celestial intensity, moving away from the more traditional, serene depictions of angels to fit the gritty, urban warfare aesthetic of the Commander format's early expansion sets. The card was later reprinted in the 2017 Commander Anthology to provide wider access to the popular legend.
